One of the world’s rarest rock records, “Dark Round the Edges”, has been unearthed by our friend, Peter Hassan, co-owner of Kenilworth Records.

It is an original coloured gatefold cover copy of “Dark Round the Edges”, released in 1972 by the Northampton-based progressive rock band, Dark.

How Rare Is a 1972 issue of Dark Round the Edges?

Only 13 such albums were ever produced in this coloured format out of an original total production of 64 albums (the remainder being black and white covers, only 12 of which were gatefolds, 38 single covers and 1 comprising “white doodle on sleeve”).

The black-and-white versions occasionally (though still rarely) appear for sale, typically commanding prices of around £8,000. Naturally, this most desirable colour version is expected to sell for considerably more.

Of course, the copy discovered by Peter is not kept at his record store, but is securely held elsewhere.

Global Interest from Record Collectors

There is strong interest among record collectors worldwide who want to own this colour copy. Peter describes it as being in “fantastic, clean condition,” and we at The Vinyl Record Collector can attest to his honesty in such matters!

Dark Founder Revisits His Album

Founder member of Dark, guitarist/vocalist Steve Giles, who designed the album cover and booklet and took most of the photographs, visited Kenilworth Records to see the copy at first hand and to provide more history on the album.

    It is indeed very rare.
So much so in fact that even the title of the album is sometimes misquoted.
    It is called:
‘Dark Round The Edges’ by DARK
    Nice article. Thanks very much!
    Steve Giles.

The title of the album is Round the Edges not Around the Edges.

Thanks for picking up on this too!
Actually, as I pointed out, the FULL correct title is:

      Dark Round The Edges
